Phil Erlanger
About Us
Philip B. Erlanger is a graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and is a Chartered Market Technician (CMT). He began his career with Reynolds Securities and then moved on to Advest Securities. . Phil has served two terms as President of the MTA and is currently on its Board of Directors.
After a tenure as the Chief Technical Analyst at Advest, Phil became the Senior Technical Analyst at Fidelity Research and Management in the early 1990s, working alongside star portfolio managers such as Peter Lynch and Jeff Vinik along with many others.
At Fidelity, Phil's proprietary price models and sentiment analysis called some of the biggest wins for Fidelity in this era, including billions of dollars of transactions on junk bonds, currencies, and equities. Phil was also known for extensive sector and group analysis that enabled various managers to play sector moves as a new bull market emerged.
In 1994, he started Phil Erlanger Research, Inc. and has provided unique technical analysis and quantitative research for many of the world's top financial institutions. His proprietary data and analysis are currently in use at institutions that collectively manage over $1 trillion in assets.
Widely regarded as one of the foremost technical analysts in the world, Phil was presented with the Market Technicians Association's coveted Best-of-the-Best Award for Computer Assisted Analysis in 1997. Phil has published a chapter in Master Traders: Strategies For Superior Returns From Today’s Top Traders entitled “Trading Seasonality”. Also, Jon Markman’s book Swing Trader: Power Strategies To Cut Risk and Boost Profits featured a section entitled “Dr. Sentiment and Mr. Strength” that delved into Phil’s philosophy on the market and walked through many case studies of how Phil approaches the markets.
Andrew Erlanger is the CIO and lead software designer for Phil Erlanger Research. His responsibilities include back end database programming and maintenance as well as web site design, custom data creation, and desktop application support and maintenance. Andrew has experience in sales force automation, real-time avionics software, database management systems, and FDA-approved medical software. He graduated in 1972 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in management, and from Temple University in 1975 with an MBA in Accounting and a MS in Computer Science.
Geoff Garbacz is one of two founders of Quantitative Partners, Inc. which was spun off from Independent Research Associates in 2002. Geoff was one of the founders of Independent Research Associates in 1995. Prior to this, Geoff worked from The Robinson-Humphrey Company from 1995 to 1990 where he was a First Vice President in the Institutional Equity Group. From 1990 to 1986, he worked from Capital Institutional Services (CIS) covering accounts in New York City and the northeast. The focus of Geoff's work has been on developing, marketing and supporting independent institutional research for the buyside community and has worked with Phil Erlanger and Erlanger Research since 1992. Geoff is a 1986 graduate of Gettysburg College with a B.A. in Political Science where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Jack Bahrenburg is a partner of Quantitative Partners, Inc. Jack has 20 years working in the finance and investment field. His contributions to the company include research development, vendor relations, client relations, and operational management. Jack currently runs all operations for The Fred Report, a research product launched with Fred Meissner, CMT in 2009 as an investment newsletter for the Financial Advisor market. Prior to founding Quantitative Partners, Jack was an equity owner in Independent Research Associates from 1995 to 2002. Previous work included financial operations at KeyCorp and assisting small business lending for Merrill Lynch Business Financial Services. Jack was selected in 1992 for the Walt Disney World College Program. He is a 1993 graduate of University of Vermont with a BS in Management and concentration in Small Business and Resource Economics.
